Mistlecombe Printable Murder Mystery Game Template

by ShuffleKit

Printable murder mystery game for families, a whole party game to host at home: eight animal guests sit down to a Midsummer supper, and in ten minutes of darkness someone takes the Duchess's Blue Pearl. For 4 to 8 players aged 10 and up with an adult as the host, in about 75 minutes. Each character card has a portrait over three panels, what to tell everyone, a secret and goals. Fourteen clue cards come out over three rounds, the host cards hold the story and the rules, and the solution card is read last. Every kind of card has its own back, and each player gets a note sheet of suspects and motives. Every guest, clue and line of the host's script is a row in a sheet, so you can write your own murder mystery on the same cards.

How to host the Mistlecombe murder mystery

You need scissors and a pencil for each player. One adult hosts, and 4 to 8 players aged 10 and up play the guests.

  1. Print the cards and cut them out, and print a note sheet for each player. Characters 1 to 4 always play, and with more players you add 5, 6, 7 and 8 in that order. A guest nobody plays was not at the supper: leave out the clue cards whose bottom line names them, and cross them off the note sheets.
  2. Give each player a character card, before the night or as they arrive. Read the story card aloud, then each player reads out the Tell everyone part of their card.
  3. Play three rounds of about 15 minutes. Start each one by reading that round's clue cards aloud and leaving them face up on the table. Then the guests question each other and chase their goals. Everyone must answer truthfully except the thief, who may lie, and a secret comes out when someone asks about it directly.
  4. After round 3, each player writes on their note sheet who took the Blue Pearl and how they did it. Then everyone reads out their answer, one at a time.
  5. Read the solution card aloud. Every player who named the thief wins. If nobody did, the thief wins.

Printing the cards and score pads

Cards: Tarot, 2.75 × 4.75 in, 69.9 × 120.7 mm, 825 × 1425 pixels at 300 DPI. With an eighth of an inch of bleed on every edge, a card goes out as 900 × 1500.

Score Pads: Large Score Pad, 8 × 10 in, 203.2 × 254 mm, 2400 × 3000 pixels at 300 DPI. With an eighth of an inch of bleed on every edge, a score pad goes out as 2475 × 3075.

On the Hobby plan, export a print-ready PDF with bleed and cut lines, each part at its own size. PNG and SVG come out at the same sizes, which is what Tabletop Simulator wants. On Indie, send the game to a print-on-demand partner through Print & Ship. The export adds the bleed: let the artwork run into it and keep the text inside the cut line.

Questions about Mistlecombe Printable Murder Mystery Game Template

Everything you need to know before getting started.

How do I write my own murder mystery with this template?

Write it in the sheet, one row per card, and decide who did it before anything else. Each guest is a Character row: Role is the line under their name, Text is what they tell everyone, Secret is something that makes them look guilty, and Goals gives them two or three things to do. Each clue is a Clue row with its Round, 1, 2 or 3, and its words in Text. A clue about something only a few guests have, such as muddy boots or a limp, rules the rest out at once, and a witness who was fooled can keep the culprit looking innocent until the last round. Before anyone plays, cross the guests off clue by clue and check that only your culprit is left. The Solution row says who did it and which clues prove it, and the note sheet's Suspect columns take your guests' names.

Is anyone murdered in this murder mystery?

No. The crime at Mistlecombe Manor is a theft: one guest takes the Blue Pearl in the ten minutes the candles are out, and nobody is hurt, which keeps it right for players of 10 and up. For an older table you can make it a murder by rewriting the story card, the first clue and the solution. Every other clue still points at the same guest.

How many players does it need, and how long does it take?

Four to eight players and an adult host. Characters 1 to 4 always play and the other four join in order, so the same cards work for any number in between; the four clue cards about the extra guests say on their bottom line when to leave them out. Each of the three rounds takes about 15 minutes, and with the story, the accusations and the solution a game runs about 75 minutes. Printing and cutting out the 27 cards takes about 20 minutes more.

What happens when I add Mistlecombe Printable Murder Mystery Game Template to a project?

The eight card designs, one score pad design, their fields, 27 sample cards and one sample score pad are copied into one project of yours, with the fields already pointed at the designs: the cards under All cards and the score pads in a collection of their own. Nothing stays linked to this page afterwards, so the author's later edits never reach your copy.

What size does Mistlecombe Printable Murder Mystery Game Template print at?

The cards are Tarot size, 2.75 × 4.75 in, 69.9 × 120.7 mm, 825 × 1425 pixels at 300 DPI. The score pads are Large Score Pad size, 8 × 10 in, 203.2 × 254 mm, 2400 × 3000 pixels at 300 DPI. Those are the numbers to hand a print shop, and each part exports at its own size.

Is Mistlecombe Printable Murder Mystery Game Template free?

Yes. Adding it, editing it, filling it with your own cards and playtesting it online are all free. Exporting print files starts on the Hobby plan, and Print & Ship through The Game Crafter is on Indie. No template sits behind a paid plan.

Can I change the designs?

Yes. They land in your project as ordinary layouts, so you can drag an element somewhere else, put your own art behind the frame, restyle the type or rename a field. Edit a design once and every card or score pad drawn on it follows.

Can I use my own cards and score pads instead of the samples?

Yes. The cards and the score pads each have a sheet, and the samples are rows in them, there to be overwritten. Type over them, add rows of your own, or bring a CSV and match its headers to the fields.

Can I sell a game made with Mistlecombe Printable Murder Mystery Game Template?

Yes. This one is ours, and you keep commercial rights to what you build from it, crowdfunding and retail included.
