How to play Phase 10, in short

For two to six players with a deck made for the game: cards numbered 1 to 12, wild cards and skips. Everyone works through the same ten phases.

  1. Deal and take turns

Deal ten cards to each player and turn the next card up to start the discard pile. On your turn, take the top card of the deck or of the discard pile, then discard one.

  2. Lay down your phase

When you hold every card your phase needs, lay them face up in front of you on your turn. You can only lay down the phase you are on, and only one a hand.

  3. Hit

Once your phase is down, you can add cards to any phase on the table, yours or another player's, as long as they fit: a 6 onto a set of 6s, or the next number onto either end of a run.

  4. Skips and wilds

A wild stands in for any number or colour. Discarding a skip makes another player miss their next turn, and a skip can never be part of a phase.

  5. Go out

The hand ends when a player gets rid of their last card. Everyone who laid down their phase moves on to the next one, and the others try the same phase again.

  6. Score and win

The others add up the cards left in their hands: 5 for each 1 to 9, 10 for each 10, 11 or 12, 15 for a skip and 25 for a wild. The first player to finish phase 10 wins, and if two finish it in the same hand, the lower score wins.

Is this an official Phase 10 phases list?

No. ShuffleKit is not affiliated with or endorsed by Mattel. The phases and rules on this page are written in our own words, and the phase list and phase cards are an original design called Stilecroft, with none of Mattel's logo, card colours or card art.

What is the hardest phase?

Phase 6 asks the most of a hand: a run of nine needs nine numbers in a row from ten cards. Phases 9 and 10 are the other slow ones, because a set of five needs five cards of one number and the deck holds only eight of each, so a wild card counts for most there.

What is phase 7?

Two sets of four: four cards of one number and four of another, such as 5 5 5 5 and 10 10 10 10. A wild card can take the place of any of them.

Can you lay down more than one phase in a hand?

No. You finish at most one phase a hand. Once it is down, use the rest of the hand to hit, adding cards to the phases on the table, so you go out sooner and are left holding fewer points.

Can I download the phase list without signing up?

Yes. Each PDF on this page has two pages, the phase list and six blank phase cards, on Letter or on A4, with no account needed. Print them at actual size: each sheet is 8 × 10 inches on either paper.

How do I put our names on the phase cards?

Add the template to a project, which is free, and type the names into Player 1 to Player 6 on a Phase Cards row of the sheet: each name prints on its own card. Exporting the PDF to print is on the Hobby plan.
