by ShuffleKit
Printable happy families cards for the classic card game, with eleven animal families of four to print and play or to fill with families of your own. The families run from Badger the Baker to Tortoise the Tailor, and each card shows the member's picture and name under the family's, with the four members listed at the foot so a player knows which cards to ask for. To make your own, type a family and its four names into the sheet and add a picture to each, anything from a class topic to your own family's photos. Poker size (2.5 × 3.5 in), nine cards to a sheet of A4 or Letter, so the 44 cards print on five sheets with one back for every card.

How to play happy families
- Print the cards and cut them out. Shuffle all 44 and deal them out one at a time, face down, until none are left. It does not matter if some players have one more card than others. Look at your cards and keep them hidden.
- The player to the left of the dealer goes first. On your turn, ask any other player for a card you need by its name: "Mrs Badger, please." You can only ask for a card from a family you already hold a card of. The list at the foot of each card shows the four members of its family.
- If they have the card, they must give it to you, and you ask again, the same player or someone else. If they do not, they say "Not at home", and it is their turn to ask.
- When you hold all four members of a family, lay them face down in front of you. A player with no cards left in their hand cannot ask, so play goes on without them.
- When every family is complete, the player with the most families wins.
Printing at poker size
Poker: 2.5 × 3.5 in, 63.5 × 88.9 mm, 750 × 1050 pixels at 300 DPI.
On the Hobby plan, export a print-ready PDF with bleed and cut lines. PNG and SVG come out at the same size, which is what Tabletop Simulator wants. On Indie, send it to a print-on-demand partner through Print & Ship.
A printer asks for an eighth of an inch of bleed on every edge on top of those numbers, so this card goes out as 825 × 1125. The export adds it. Let the artwork run into the bleed and keep the text inside the cut line, and nothing arrives trimmed.

Everything you need to know before getting started.

How do I make my own happy families cards?
Each card is a row in the sheet, and a family is the four rows that share a Family, such as Our Family or Planets. Type each card's name in Name and pick Father, Mother, Son or Daughter in Member, and the list at the foot of the card fills in that member. To use photos, name each file after its card, such as Dad.jpg, and choose Add images by file name… on the Picture column. A family of things rather than people, such as four planets, leaves Member empty, and its cards print without the list.
Is happy families the same as Go Fish?
They are close relatives. In both you ask another player for a card, and you keep asking for as long as you get what you ask for. Go Fish uses an ordinary deck and collects four of a kind, and a player who is turned away draws from a pile. Happy families has its own picture cards, every card is dealt at the start, and a player who is turned away hands the turn to the player who said "Not at home".
How do I print happy families cards at home?
Export a print PDF, which comes with the Hobby plan: nine poker cards, 2.5 by 3.5 inches, to a sheet of A4 or Letter, so the 44 cards fill four sheets and eight cards of a fifth. The backs come out lined up for two-sided printing. Print one test sheet to see which way your printer turns the page, then use card stock if your printer takes it. The back is a dark pattern that runs off every edge, so a picture does not show through and a back printed a little off-center still looks like every other back.
What happens when I add Burrowby Printable Happy Families Card Game Template to a project?
The two designs, the four fields and the 44 sample cards are copied into a project of yours, with the fields already pointed at the design. Nothing stays linked to this page afterwards, so the author's later edits never reach your copy.
What size does Burrowby Printable Happy Families Card Game Template print at?
Poker size: 2.5 × 3.5 in, 63.5 × 88.9 mm, 750 × 1050 pixels at 300 DPI. Those are the numbers to hand a print shop, and the ones to check a sleeve against.
Is Burrowby Printable Happy Families Card Game Template free?
Yes. Adding it, editing it, filling it with your own cards and playtesting it online are all free. Exporting print files starts on the Hobby plan, and Print & Ship through The Game Crafter is on Indie. No template sits behind a paid plan.
Can I change the designs?
Yes. They land in your project as ordinary layouts, so you can drag an element somewhere else, put your own art behind the frame, restyle the type or rename a field. Edit a design once and every card on it follows.
Can I use my own cards instead of the samples?
Yes — the samples are rows in a sheet, and they are there to be overwritten. Type over them, add rows of your own, or bring a CSV and match its headers to the fields.
Can I sell a game made with Burrowby Printable Happy Families Card Game Template?
Yes. This one is ours, and you keep commercial rights to what you build from it, crowdfunding and retail included.
